Tips for Teaching Letter C Words

  1. The Two Sounds of Letter C

The letter C makes two distinct sounds–one is a soft C sound and the other is a hard C sound. Typically, when C comes before i, y, or e, it makes a soft C sound, like /s/ in city and cycle. When C comes before any other letter, it makes a hard sound, like /k/ in cake and cone. These worksheets on the hard and soft sounds of C and G  can help.
  1. Connect Words and Sounds to Real Life

When you notice a word from the list of letter C words or see the letter C while out and about, point it out to your child. Connecting new letters and words to real objects can help grow their understanding and help them make connections that aid in remembering the new letter or word.
  1. Be Patient and Positive

Every child learns at their own pace and some new skills are harder to learn than others. Celebrate progress, no matter how small, and provide positive reinforcement to help build confidence.
