Tips for Teaching Letter G Words

  1. The Two Sounds of Letter G

The letter G can make two sounds: a hard G sound, like in the word gold, or a soft G sound, like in the word giraffe. Help your child notice the difference in sound between the hard and soft G and how their mouth moves differently to make each sound. Our Hard and Soft Sounds of C and G worksheet can help with this.
  1. The Rules of Letter G

Older children may appreciate this tip for knowing when to make a hard or soft letter G sound: Typically, when the letter G is followed by the letters a, o, or u, it makes the hard G sound, as in gut, go, gas, gum, and game. When G is followed by i, y, or e, it usually makes the soft G sound, as in gem, ginger, giant, and gym.
  1. Use Multiple Teaching Approaches

Introducing a new letter sound in a variety of ways can help children better understand and get familiar with it. Combine our list of letter G words with the letter G song, worksheets, and activities to approach this new letter sound in many different ways.

Tips for Teaching Letter F Words

  1. Grab a Mirror

Saying F words in front of a mirror can help children see what their mouth should look like to pronounce the letter F. Show your child where to place their teeth on their lip to make the sound. Pronounce the sound in the mirror, pointing to where your teeth are resting on your lips. The mirror will give your child visual feedback to make sure their mouth position matches yours.
  1. Focus on the Sound

For young children, work on mastering the sound the letter F makes before spending too much time on the letter F words. Help your child practice making the “fffff” sound, then move on to the simpler words in the letter F list.
  1. Make Real World Connections

If you see a letter F while running errands or notice a word from the letter F list, point it out to your child. Connecting new letters and words to real objects can help grow their understanding.
