Why Is Soccer Called Soccer Instead of Football?
The game of soccer is referred to as “football” in most countries. So why is soccer called soccer in some countries? The soccer vs. football name dates back to the mid-1800s, when England formed the Football Association and created the rules of association football (a.k.a. soccer). Rugby football was also very popular at the time. To help distinguish between the two sports, students shortened the name of rugby football to “rugger” and the name of association football to “assoccer.” Over time, this name was shortened even more to the current name of “soccer.”
