Overview of the Vowel Practice Worksheets for Second Graders

Children will find word searches, sentence writing practice with vowel sounds, vowel team practice, and more in this collection of vowel worksheets. They’ll also get to practice the “schwa” sound, which are vowel sounds that take very little effort to say, and their sound is sometimes lost in a word, such as with the second “o” in the word “chocolate.” Check out our list of activities below for more vowel practice fun.

Activities to Extend Learning with Your Vowel Practice Worksheets

Recommended for: Second grade

Vowel Sound Stories

Ask your child to write short stories using words from their vowel practice worksheets that contain certain vowel sounds or as many different vowel sounds as possible. Then have your child read their story to you and point out where they used different vowel sounds.

Vowel Sound Scavenger Hunt

After completing their vowel sound worksheets, have your child pick one sheet for this exercise. Ask your child to pick one word featured on their worksheets that has a vowel sound. Then challenge them to find an object in the house that uses that same vowel sound in its name.

Word Sorting

Challenge your child to sort all of the words highlighted in their vowel practice worksheets into groups based on vowel sounds or vowel teams.
