Long Vowel Sounds Worksheets

One of the key stepping stones to reading mastery lies in understanding long vowel sounds. Long vowel sounds are represented by the vowel’s name itself, rather than a short, quick sound. For example, in the word “cake,” the ‘a’ says its name, producing a long ‘a’ sound, like “ay.”

What’s Included in the Long Vowel Sounds Worksheets?

The ABCmouse Long Vowel Sounds worksheets are designed to help your child practice saying and recognizing long vowel sounds. As they complete the worksheets, children can work to reinforce their understanding of long vowel sounds as they read the words at the top of each sheet and enjoy coloring in the pictures they see.

Ideas to Extend Learning with Your Long Vowel Sounds Worksheets

Recommended for: Kindergarten

Vowel Race

When your child finishes their worksheets, challenge them to find something in the house that uses the same vowel sounds shown in each worksheet. Turn it into a game by timing them. For example, tell them they have 20 seconds to find something in the house that has the long vowel sound “e,” like in “meet.”

Vowel Match Up

Go through your child’s worksheets with them, and pick one worksheet from the pile. Say the vowel sound out loud for them to hear, and ask them to repeat it back to you. Then ask them to think of another word that uses that same vowel sound. Repeat this activity until you’ve gone through all of the worksheets.

Vowel Hot Potato

Have your child pick a long vowel sound worksheet from their pile and say the word and vowel sound aloud. As they say the word, have them toss a rolled-up sock, soft ball, or a small pillow to you. When you catch it, it’s your turn to say a word with a long vowel sound. Each time someone catches the sock, ball, or pillow, they have to say a different word with a long vowel sound.
