Study: ABCmouse’s Effectiveness in Combating the Summer Slide

As part of our ongoing commitment to advancing early childhood education, ABCmouse Early Learning Academy is delighted to share the outcomes of a groundbreaking study conducted in partnership with educators. This study investigates the role of ABCmouse in preventing the summer slide—a critical concern for rising first graders—by providing a stimulating platform for continued learning during the summer break.

Addressing the Summer Slide with ABCmouse

In collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a study was conducted among 999 rising first graders to evaluate the effectiveness of ABCmouse in mitigating summer learning loss. Children were randomly assigned to either the treatment group, which had free home access to ABCmouse, or the control group, which did not. The results yielded compelling insights into the impact of digital learning tools on academic retention and advancement.

A mother and daughter learning on a digital screen together.

Key Findings: A Summer of Learning

  1. Preventing Reading Loss

Children who engaged with ABCmouse over the summer, completing at least 208 Learning Activities, demonstrated significant gains. Not only did they avoid the summer slide, but they also showcased progress equivalent to one month of instructional time compared to their peers in the control group. This progress extended into the following academic year, with approximately two additional months of academic advancement observed by winter.
  1. The More, The Better

Analysis of the data revealed a notable correlation: the more ABCmouse Learning Activities completed over the summer, the greater the gains in reading scores. This underscores the importance of consistent engagement with the platform for optimizing learning outcomes.
  1. A Boost for Math

While the study primarily focused on reading outcomes, positive trends in math gains were also observed among children who extensively utilized ABCmouse. This suggests potential benefits across core academic skills with sustained use of the platform.
  1. Parental Support

A survey conducted at the conclusion of the summer revealed overwhelming parental support for ABCmouse. The majority reported witnessing a meaningful impact on their children’s learning and expressed enthusiasm for continued use into first grade.

A Tool for Every Parent

The findings of this study provide compelling evidence of ABCmouse’s efficacy in combatting the summer slide and promoting academic growth during the summer months. By offering an engaging and interactive platform for continued learning, ABCmouse empowers children to not only retain but enhance their academic skills over the break.

For parents seeking to support their child’s educational journey, integrating ABCmouse into their summer routine can be a strategic decision. It goes beyond just preventing learning loss; it entails taking proactive measures to ensure a smooth transition back to school and set the stage for ongoing academic success.

In a landscape where summer learning loss can exacerbate achievement gaps, particularly among children from disadvantaged backgrounds, tools like ABCmouse serve as more than just educational resources—they represent opportunities to bridge divides and promote equity in learning experiences.

As the summer break approaches, let’s transform screen time into learning time. With ABCmouse, parents have a valuable resource at their fingertips that can significantly impact their child’s academic trajectory, laying the groundwork for success in the upcoming school year and beyond.

Study: ABCmouse’s Impact on Pre-K and Kindergarten Academic Success

Early childhood education plays a pivotal role in preventing school failure and fostering academic success. To address this critical need, ABCmouse Early Learning Academy, in collaboration with the public school district prekindergarten (DPK) program in Tupelo, Mississippi, conducted two longitudinal studies to investigate the influence of our platform on the acquisition of literacy and math skills among prekindergarten and kindergarten students.

Overview of the Studies

Our research builds upon established literature highlighting the importance of early reading and math skills in predicting academic outcomes.

In Study 1, focusing on prekindergarten students identified as at risk for school failure, those who engaged in a higher number of ABCmouse learning activities demonstrated greater academic gains compared to their peers.

Study 2, a quasi-experimental design following the same cohort into kindergarten, revealed that regular usage of ABCmouse facilitated accelerated growth in literacy and math skills, bridging gaps between students of varying readiness levels.

Participants:

Study 1 employed a naturalistic design, with prekindergarten students having varying usage of ABCmouse throughout the school year.

Study 2 utilized a quasi-experimental design, assigning two elementary schools full access to ABCmouse while restricting access in the other two schools for the first half of the year. Teachers were trained to integrate ABCmouse into their curriculum, ensuring at least 45 minutes of weekly usage.

Design & Procedure:

Study 1 comprised 230 prekindergarten students from Tupelo, Mississippi, prioritizing enrollment for those at risk of school failure, English language learners, children with developmental disabilities/delays, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Study 2 included 571 kindergarten students from four elementary schools with varying levels of access to ABCmouse.

Study Results

The findings from both studies underscore the positive impact of ABCmouse on academic growth, particularly in literacy. Three key findings emerge:

  • Regular usage of ABCmouse across prekindergarten and kindergarten facilitates greater academic growth, particularly in literacy.
  • ABCmouse usage helps students at risk of school failure better prepare for kindergarten and achieve significant growth in literacy and math.
  • Access to the full ABCmouse curriculum correlates with higher usage levels and accelerated academic gains, highlighting the importance of sustained engagement with the platform.

These results offer actionable insights for educators and parents, emphasizing the importance of integrating ABCmouse into early childhood education to enhance academic readiness and success. For access to the full study, please refer to the provided PDF.

Study: ABCmouse Enhances School Readiness Transitioning from Head Start to Kindergarten

In our recent study conducted in collaboration with Albina Head Start, we examined the efficacy of integrating ABCmouse Early Learning Academy into their curriculum as a means to bolster school readiness among young learners transitioning from Head Start to kindergarten. The study, available in full PDF format here, delves into the impact of digital learning tools like ABCmouse in facilitating a seamless transition for children entering formal schooling.

Our findings reveal a significant correlation between ABCmouse usage and improved kindergarten preparation. By supplementing traditional classroom instruction with ABCmouse activities, teachers across 25 classrooms positively influenced nearly 500 students. Notably, for every additional 100 ABCmouse learning activities completed by a student, there was a 3.6% increase in school readiness scores. This effect was particularly pronounced in classrooms where ABCmouse was utilized more extensively, indicating the substantial role digital tools can play in enhancing early learning outcomes.

A child smiling while working on ABCmouse.com.

Furthermore, the study highlights ABCmouse’s pivotal role in fostering family engagement in children’s education. By assigning lessons for at-home completion, educators like Ms. Araya strengthened the connection between classroom learning and parental involvement. This approach not only supported academic growth but also promoted cooperative behavior and sustained engagement in learning activities.

Our partnership with Albina Head Start enabled us to extend ABCmouse access to waitlisted families, addressing the challenge of limited Head Start slots. The case of Kenya B. and her daughter Ja’Nyah exemplifies the transformative potential of this access, with Ja’Nyah demonstrating remarkable progress in literacy and math skills within a few months of using ABCmouse.

The study underscores the positive impact of high-quality digital educational tools like ABCmouse in early childhood education. By facilitating school readiness and enhancing family engagement, ABCmouse not only supports academic growth but also strengthens the home-school connection, laying a solid foundation for future learning achievements.

Study: ABCmouse Accelerates Kindergarten Learning Through Home-Based Solution

In our ongoing dedication to revolutionizing early childhood education, ABCmouse Early Learning Academy conducted a study investigating the efficacy of digital learning in augmenting literacy and math skills among kindergarten children within the comforts of their homes, underscoring ABCmouse’s pivotal role in bolstering academic foundations beyond traditional classroom settings.

Overview of the Study

In this meticulously designed 13-week randomized, double-blind experimental study, conducted in collaboration with educational experts, 281 kindergarten-aged children from Southern California participated. Half of the participants were assigned to engage with ABCmouse for an average of 45 minutes per week, while the remaining formed the control group without access to ABCmouse. This rigorous approach aimed to assess the platform’s effectiveness in a non-classroom environment, offering valuable insights into the transformative potential of interactive digital learning experiences.

Key Discoveries: Enhancing Literacy and Math Proficiency

The study’s findings reveal compelling evidence of ABCmouse’s impact on early literacy and math proficiency among kindergarten children:

  1. Significant Literacy Development

Children engaging with ABCmouse demonstrated a remarkable 25% enhancement in early literacy skill growth compared to their counterparts in the control group. This pivotal discovery underscores ABCmouse’s efficacy in advancing fundamental reading skills crucial for young learners.
  1. Amplified Improvement for Struggling Students

Particularly noteworthy is the significant progress observed among participants with lower baseline performance. These children experienced a 33% greater improvement in literacy skills and an astonishing 48% increase in math skills by the study’s conclusion. ABCmouse emerges not only as a learning reinforcement tool but also as a vital resource for bridging educational gaps and propelling academic growth among those initially lagging behind.
  1. Short-term Engagement, Lasting Academic Achievements

Remarkably, these substantial educational gains were realized over a concise period of 13 weeks, highlighting ABCmouse’s capacity to deliver meaningful academic outcomes efficiently and effectively.

Implications for Parents

The insights gleaned from this comprehensive study offer invaluable guidance to parents seeking to contribute to their children’s early learning journeys actively:

By dedicating just 45 minutes per week to ABCmouse, parents can facilitate significant progress in crucial academic domains, laying a robust foundation for sustained educational success.

For parents of kindergarteners concerned about literacy and math readiness, ABCmouse emerges as an optimal resource, offering a dynamic and efficient approach to bolstering learning beyond the confines of the classroom.

Empowering Parents, Enhancing Learning Experiences

Letter I Hands-on Learning

Tips for Teaching Letter I Words

  1. Proper Mouth Positioning

When working with your child to learn the letter I sound, help them position their tongue in the right way to make the sound. While making the “ih” sound, the tip of their tongue should barely touch the bottom of their teeth, and the middle of their tongue should arch up a tiny bit.
  1. Tactile Learning

Engage your child’s senses while learning any new letter, as it can help them better connect with what they’re learning. Invite your child to form letters with clay or by tracing letters in the sand or dirt. As they make the shape of the new letter, help them practice saying its sound at the same time.
  1. Incorporate Technology

Use educational apps and videos that focus on the letter I, creating another learning path for your child that offers auditory and visual input.

Tips for Teaching Letter H Words

  1. Feel It

When saying the H sound, a small puff of air is released from your mouth. To help your child understand this, hold their hand up in front of your mouth as you make the H sound. Then have your child hold their hand up in front of their own mouth as they make the sound.
  1. See It

Hold up a mirror in front of your child’s face as they make the letter H sound. Because air is released from their mouth as they say the sound, they should see the mirror fog up a bit as they say it.
  1. Practice It
