Words That Start With the Letter K for Kids

Help your child expand their vocabulary and learn the letter K sound with these letter K words for preschoolers, kindergarteners, and elementary students. These lists of words include simple CVC words and more complex words for older children. Simple Preschool Letter K Words
☐ key: a small piece of metal that’s cut to fit into a particular lock. “She used the key to open the door.”
☐ kick: to strike with the foot or feet. “He can kick the ball very far.”
☐ kite: a lightweight frame covered with paper or cloth that is flown in the wind at the end of a long string. “The child flew a kite in the open field.”
☐ knack: an ability to do something easily and well. “He has a knack for making people smile.”
☐ knee: the joint between the thigh and the lower leg in humans. “She scraped her knee when she fell.”
☐ knit: to create fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with needles. “She knits every evening while watching TV.”
☐ knob: a rounded handle, as on a door or drawer. “He turned the knob to open the door.”
☐ knot: a fastening made by looping a piece of string or rope on itself and tightening it. “He tied a knot in the rope to secure the boat.”
☐ koi: a type of colorful fish often kept in ponds. “The koi swam gracefully in the pond.”

Kindergarten Letter K Words
☐ keep: to retain or continue to have possession of. “He likes to keep his toys organized.”
☐ kennel: a small shelter for a dog or cat. “The dog sleeps in the kennel outside.”
☐ kettle: a container or device with a lid, spout, and handle in which water is boiled. “She boiled water in the kettle for tea.”
☐ kilt: a knee-length skirt of pleated tartan cloth, traditionally worn by men as part of Scottish Highland dress. “He wore a kilt to the festival.”
☐ kind: having or showing a friendly, generous, and considerate nature. “She was very kind to share her snacks.”
☐ king: a male ruler. “The king wore a golden crown.”
☐ knoll: a small hill or mound. “They picnicked on top of the grassy knoll.”
Elementary Letter K Words
☐ karate: a form of martial arts that focuses on striking, kicking, and defensive blocking with arms and legs. “He takes karate classes every Saturday.”
☐ kayak: a small, narrow watercraft which is typically propelled by means of a double-bladed paddle. “They paddled the kayak across the lake.”
☐ kernel: the softer, usually edible part of a seed, nut, or fruit stone contained within its hard shell. “She threw away the unpopped kernels of popcorn.”
☐ keyboard: a panel of keys that operate a computer or typewriter. “He learned to type fast on the keyboard.”
☐ khaki: a fabric of a light brownish-yellow color. “His khaki pants were part of his scout uniform.”
☐ kidney: an organ in the body that filters waste from the blood. “The doctor checked his kidney function during the exam.”
☐ kinetic: relating to or resulting from motion. “The exhibit featured several kinetic sculptures that moved in the wind.”
☐ know-how: practical knowledge or skill. “Her technical know-how was crucial for the project’s success.”
☐ knowledge: information and skills acquired through experience or education. “He has a wide range of knowledge in history.”
☐ knuckle: the part of the finger where bones meet, especially where the finger joins the hand. “He cracked his knuckles nervously.”
☐ kudos: praise and honor received for an achievement. “She received kudos from everyone on her team for her hard work.”
Food Words
☐ kabob: skewered and grilled cubes of meat, fish, or vegetables. “They cooked chicken kabobs on the grill.”
☐ kale: a type of cabbage with green or purple leaves, known for its health benefits. “Kale is a key ingredient in her green smoothie.”
☐ kasha: a dish made of buckwheat groats that is popular in Eastern European cuisine. “Kasha is often served with onions and mushrooms.”
☐ kefir: a fermented milk drink similar to yogurt. “Kefir is known for its healthy qualities.”
☐ kelp: a type of seaweed that is rich in nutrients and often used in Asian dishes. “Kelp is sometimes used in soups.”
☐ ketchup: a sweet and tangy sauce typically made from tomatoes, vinegar, and seasonings and spices. “He put too much ketchup on his fries.”

- Practice with Pictures

Young learners may not be able to read many of these words on their own. Adults can read unknown words aloud to their children, helping them hear the beginning letter E sound. In collaboration with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a study was conducted among 999 rising first graders to evaluate the effectiveness of ABCmouse in mitigating summer learning loss. Children were randomly assigned to either the treatment group, which had free home access to ABCmouse, or the control group, which did not. Study: ABCmouse’s Impact on Pre-K and Kindergarten Academic Success
Early childhood education plays a pivotal role in preventing school failure and fostering academic success. To address this critical need, ABCmouse Early Learning Academy, in collaboration with the public school district prekindergarten (DPK) program in Tupelo, Mississippi, conducted two longitudinal studies to investigate the influence of our platform on the acquisition of literacy and math skills among prekindergarten and kindergarten students.
Overview of the Studies
Our research builds upon established literature highlighting the importance of early reading and math skills in predicting academic outcomes.
In Study 1, focusing on prekindergarten students identified as at risk for school failure, those who engaged in a higher number of ABCmouse learning activities demonstrated greater academic gains compared to their peers.
Study 2, a quasi-experimental design following the same cohort into kindergarten, revealed that regular usage of ABCmouse facilitated accelerated growth in literacy and math skills, bridging gaps between students of varying readiness levels.
Participants:
Study 1 employed a naturalistic design, with prekindergarten students having varying usage of ABCmouse throughout the school year.
Study 2 utilized a quasi-experimental design, assigning two elementary schools full access to ABCmouse while restricting access in the other two schools for the first half of the year. Teachers were trained to integrate ABCmouse into their curriculum, ensuring at least 45 minutes of weekly usage.
Design & Procedure:
Study 1 comprised 230 prekindergarten students from Tupelo, Mississippi, prioritizing enrollment for those at risk of school failure, English language learners, children with developmental disabilities/delays, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Study 2 included 571 kindergarten students from four elementary schools with varying levels of access to ABCmouse.

In our recent study conducted in collaboration with Albina Head Start, we examined the efficacy of integrating ABCmouse Early Learning Academy into their curriculum as a means to bolster school readiness among young learners transitioning from Head Start to kindergarten. Tips for Teaching Letter I Words
- Proper Mouth Positioning
When working with your child to learn the letter I sound, help them position their tongue in the right way to make the sound. While making the “ih” sound, the tip of their tongue should barely touch the bottom of their teeth, and the middle of their tongue should arch up a tiny bit.
- Tactile Learning
Engage your child’s senses while learning any new letter, as it can help them better connect with what they’re learning. Invite your child to form letters with clay or by tracing letters in the sand or dirt. As they make the shape of the new letter, help them practice saying its sound at the same time.

Hunt for ‘H’
Organize a scavenger hunt where children search for items that start with the letter H around the classroom or home, such a hat, highlighter, hair brush, and hearts.

Gather up your child’s favorite art supplies and invite them to draw or paint things that start with the letter H. Depending on their age, work with them to identify and label each of their masterpieces.

Tips for Teaching Letter H Words
- Feel It
When saying the H sound, a small puff of air is released from your mouth. To help your child understand this, hold their hand up in front of your mouth as you make the H sound. Then have your child hold their hand up in front of their own mouth as they make the sound.
- See It
Hold up a mirror in front of your child’s face as they make the letter H sound. Because air is released from their mouth as they say the sound, they should see the mirror fog up a bit as they say it.
- Practice It
As you and your child go about your day, point out the letter H sound in the words you say, whether you’re reading a book or simply pointing to objects in your home.
