Each individual piece has its own shape and color. It\u2019s the order and pattern in which you connect them that creates a new, bigger shape or object.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">It\u2019s the same with word blending. Phonemes (sounds) are the bricks, and kids learn to recognize each one individually. But before we go, let&#8217;s think about the sounds we hear in that word. What sounds do you hear in the word home (pronouncing it as h-ooooooo-mmmmm)?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Letter-Sound Correspondence&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">Pre-readers not only need to <strong>recognize the letters of the alphabet, but they also need to know the sounds they stand for.<\/strong> This is known as letter-sound correspondence, which means understanding that the letter \u201cT\u201d stands for the sound \u201ctuh,\u201d while the letter G stands for the sound \u201cguh\u201d or \u201cjuh.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group aofl-desktop-margin has-background\" style=\"border-radius:15px;background-color:#b8d4f9\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>This skill needs to be completely automatic<\/strong><\/strong>&#8230;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-no-padding has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-32ad18792cf0b0eee5ab7216d5ff034e wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#01075f\">However, children don\u2019t need to know all of the letter-sound correspondences before blending. It\u2019s enough to master a handful of consonants. Start with the most frequently used consonants plus short vowel sounds.
