correspondence) means that you match each object being counted to exactly one number and that you use each number only once<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">Children who master this concept can count a group of items one by one, assigning one number to each item, without skipping a number or counting any item twice. As you take each grape out, you count it by assigning it a number. When you take out the first grape, you say \u201cone.\u201d When you take out the second, you say \u201ctwo,\u201d etc. Each grape is counted once, using the numbers in order without skipping or repeating any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">While this seems like an extremely simple concept, it\u2019s not something children automatically understand. <strong>Teaching 1:1 correspondence involves explaining and modeling the desired behaviors.<\/strong> Kids don\u2019t need to learn the term itself\u2014they just need to learn how it works.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots aofl-advice-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"one-to-one-vs.-rote\"><strong>One to One Correspondence vs. Rote Counting&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">Most kids learn to recite the numbers one to ten during their toddler years. <strong>Reciting numbers in the correct order from memory is called rote counting.<\/strong> It\u2019s an important prerequisite to mastering one to one correspondence and the two are often learned hand-in-hand.
