As children learn about vowels, they come to realize these letters and sounds come with many nuances! In addition to long and short vowel sounds, letter combinations known as vowel teams add another dimension to spelling and decoding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vowel team is a combination of letters that together stand for one vowel sound. Usually, this refers to a pair of vowels, such as -ai <\/em>in rain<\/em> or -ou <\/em>in about<\/em>. Vowel teams can also include consonants, like w<\/em> in lawn<\/em> and y<\/em> in hay<\/em>. To add to the confusion, one vowel team can stand for different vowel sounds and there can be multiple ways to spell each vowel sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the good news\u2013understanding vowel teams gets easier with time and practice. While kids usually start learning about vowel teams around first grade, they\u2019ll spend several years mastering the many combinations and sounds they can make. That means you can take your time and tackle them slowly, adding in new letter combinations one at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vowel Team Types <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In general, there are three main types of vowel teams, divided up by the sounds they make. Children don\u2019t necessarily need to learn these types and terms, but adults who are teaching young readers may find it helpful to understand the difference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long Vowel Teams <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In these teams, two vowels stand for the sound of one long vowel, as in –ea <\/em>in teach, <\/em>–ai<\/em> in train, <\/em>and \u2013ay <\/em>in stay.<\/em> Note that the -ea<\/em> stands for the long e<\/em> sound (\/\u0113\/), while the -ai<\/em> stands for the long a <\/em>(\/\u0101\/) sound. Additionally, the vowel team \u2013ay includes the \u201csometimes vowel\u201d of y<\/em>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Short Vowel Teams <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As you might guess, in this type of team, two vowels stand for the sound of a single short vowel, as in -ea<\/em> in bread<\/em> or -ui<\/em> in built<\/em>. These are much less common than long vowel teams and diphthongs.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Diphthong Vowel Teams <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In a diphthong vowel team, two letters combine together to stand for a new sound. They\u2019re sometimes called \u201csliding sounds,\u201d because you slide the two sounds together into one smooth motion to form a new sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, in the word soil<\/em>, the -oi<\/em> combination doesn\u2019t sound like the letters o <\/em>or i <\/em>but instead stands for its own sound. Other diphthongs include combinations like -ou<\/em> (as in mouth<\/em>) or -au<\/em> (as in taut<\/em>) and -ow<\/em> (as in cow)<\/em>. Note that the diphthong \u2013ow<\/em> includes a consonant. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Vowel Teams with Consonants  <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Some vowel teams are made up of a vowel plus the consonant, as seen in the vowel teams \u2013ow<\/em> and \u2013ay<\/em> from above.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll also find vowel teams that include \u201csilent\u201d consonants like -eigh<\/em> or -igh<\/em>, as in weigh<\/em> or high<\/em>. These are less common and usually taught later, after children have mastered the more common vowel team combinations.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As noted earlier, some vowel teams can stand for more than one sound, and many vowel sounds can be represented by more than one vowel team spelling. Here\u2019s a general breakdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach Vowel Teams and Sounds One at a Time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

At this point, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of possibilities of vowel team sounds and spellings. Just remember\u2014you don\u2019t need to teach them all at once! You can make the process easier by breaking them into categories and tackling them slowly over time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try the suggested teaching order shown here and cover just one vowel team at a time. Mix vowel team activities with other literacy skills, so kids don\u2019t feel bored or overwhelmed. Be patient and take time to make sure your child feels comfortable with each combination.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with Predictable, Common, Long Vowel Teams <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Begin with the most common vowel teams. Many programs start with –ai<\/em>, since it only stands for one predictable sound that kids are already familiar with: long a<\/em> (\/\u0101\/). If your child grasps the concept fairly easily, you can also introduce -ay<\/em>, since this vowel team stands for the same sound. Next, teach the predictable long o<\/em> vowel teams of -oa<\/em> and -oe<\/em>. Finally, learn -ee<\/em>, which always stands for a long e <\/em>sound (\/\u0113\/). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tip: <\/strong>For each vowel team, note whether this spelling is more likely to be found at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. This will help kids figure out the right spelling when more than one vowel team is possible. For instance, -oa<\/em> usually occurs in the beginning or middle of a word (oar, float<\/em>) while -oe<\/em> is found at the end (toe, hoe<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introduce Predictable Diphthong Vowel Teams Next <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A diphthong team stands for a whole new sound! While it\u2019s not necessarily important that your child knows the term diphthong<\/em>, they should recognize the vowel teams that create their own unique sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
