Here\u2019s everything you need to know about consonants and ways to help your child understand how they differ from vowels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading aofl-advice-subheading has-text-color\" id=\"what-are-consonants\" style=\"color:#033eaa;font-style:normal;font-weight:600\"><strong>What Are Consonant Letters?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group aofl-advice-activities-block has-background\" style=\"border-radius:15px;background-color:#dfe4ff\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.5\">In English, vowels are the letters a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y. <strong>Consonants are all the other letters in the alphabet<\/strong>. Fourteen consonants have only one sound:&nbsp;<strong>B, F, H, J, K, L M, N, P, R, T, V, W, and Z<\/strong>. However, seven consonants can have more than one sound: C, G, D, S, Y, and X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\"><strong>Consonant sounds are made by blocking air<\/strong> using your teeth, tongue, or lips. For example, say the word \u201cpad\u201d and emphasize the beginning consonant sound \u201cpuh\u201d while holding your hand in front of your mouth. Notice how you make the sound by bringing your lips together to block air.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">For other consonants, you use the positions of your teeth or tongue to block the air. To see this in action, begin to say the letter \/k\/ and freeze your mouth in position. The back of your tongue is now touching the top of your mouth (known as the \u201cpalate\u201d), blocking the airflow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\"><strong>Vowel sounds don\u2019t block the air flow<\/strong>. Try saying the various vowel sounds (like \u201cah\u201d or \u201coo\u201d) with your hand in front of your mouth. Generally, when Y is at the beginning of a word, it stands for a consonant sound and makes the \u201cyuh\u201d sound, as in <em>yellow<\/em>. When speaking, you use your vocal cords to make a voiced consonant sound. If you feel vibrations, the consonant is a voiced sound. (All vowel sounds are also voiced.) Unvoiced consonant sounds will not make your throat vibrate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.5\" class=\"wp-block-list has-text-color\">\n<li><strong>Voiced<\/strong>: b, d, g, j, l, m, n, r, v, w, y, z&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unvoiced<\/strong>: p, t, k, f, s, h&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group aofl-advice-activities-block has-background\" style=\"border-radius:15px;background-color:#dfe4ff\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.5\"><strong>Here\u2019s an example:<\/strong> Say the word \u201cpat,\u201d breaking it into its individual sounds: \/p\/ \/a\/ \/t\/. When you say \/p\/ and \/t\/, your throat will not vibrate. It will vibrate when you say \/a\/. Now try this again, with the sounds of the word \u201cbad\u201d \u2013 \/b\/ \/a\/ \/d\/. All three of these make your throat vibrate, so they\u2019re all voiced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\"><br>Another easy way to tell the difference? <strong>Try singing!<\/strong> You can sing voiced consonants and vowels, but not unvoiced consonants. Try singing a scale using \u201cla-la-la,\u201d and then \u201cta-ta-ta.\u201d You can connect the la-la-las, but not the ta-ta-tas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading aofl-advice-subheading has-text-color\" id=\"sound\" style=\"color:#033eaa;font-style:normal;font-weight:600\"><strong>Do Any Consonants Stand for More Than One Sound?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;font-style:normal;font-weight:300;line-height:1.5\">You probably know that vowels can stand for more than one sound (long and short sounds, among others), and some consonants stand for multiple sounds too. We\u2019ve already mentioned the letter Y, which stands for a consonant sound and a vowel sound. Here are other consonants that stand for multiple sounds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.5\" class=\"wp-block-list has-text-color\">\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> has a hard sound, \/k\/, as in <em>cookie<\/em>, and a soft sound, \/s\/, as in <em>city<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>G<\/strong> also has hard and soft sounds. The hard sound \/g\/ is found in <em>rag<\/em>, while the soft sound \/j\/ is heard in <em>cage<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>S<\/strong> can make three sounds. In words like <em>snake<\/em>, it makes the simple \/s\/ sound. In <em>rose<\/em>, it makes a \/z\/ sound. And in some words, like <em>sugar<\/em> or <em>sure<\/em>, it makes the \/sh\/ sound, even without the h as part of the spelling.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> can also make three different sounds. At the end of words like <em>fix<\/em>, it makes a \/ks\/ sound. In the middle of words, like <em>exact<\/em> or <em>exam<\/em>, it makes a \/gs\/ sound. And when it\u2019s at the beginning, X makes a \/z\/ sound, as in <em>xylophone<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>T<\/strong> makes three sounds too. Usually it makes the standard \/t\/ sound, as in <em>top<\/em> or <em>cat<\/em>. But in combination with the letters -ion or -ial, it makes a \/sh\/ sound, as in <em>fiction<\/em> or <em>financial<\/em>. However, it\u2019s an essential skill to master. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcmouse.com\/learn\/advice\/how-to-teach-spelling-to-kids\/13781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">In order to spell<\/a>, children must hear the sounds in words clearly and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcmouse.com\/learn\/advice\/easy-steps-to-help-teach-a-child-to-read\/9266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">in order to read<\/a>, children must recognize then blend together the sounds that consonants stand for. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to spend time helping them grow a true understanding of these letters and all the different sounds they can make. Sort these letters with your child and use them to talk about the differences.
