What is the Short I Sound?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short ‘I’ sound is pronounced “ih.”  It’s often heard in the middle of words, like mit<\/em> or sip<\/em>, and you can also hear it at the start of some words, like itch<\/em> or igloo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short I Word<\/strong> Sight Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sight words are becoming better known as high-frequency words, or the words that are most commonly found in print. When teaching children high-frequency words<\/a>, call their attention to the letters and sounds in each word, breaking the word apart phonetically when possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some sight words are considered irregular words, meaning they contain one or more letters or letter combinations that are not<\/em> pronounced in a typical way, such as the “s” in has<\/em> that sounds more like \/z\/ than \/s\/. Spend some extra time on these irregular words, as it can take longer to master these nuances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
