Even if math isn\u2019t your own personal favorite subject, it\u2019s important to encourage a positive attitude toward math in your child. Acknowledge their struggles, but don\u2019t turn math into the enemy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.49\">Help them develop a<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncee\/edlabs\/regions\/northwest\/pdf\/math-attitudes-training\/powerpoint-growth-mindset.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a growth mindset<\/a> when it comes to math.&nbsp;Turn \u201cI can\u2019t do this\u201d into \u201cI can\u2019t do this <em>yet<\/em>.\u201d Remind them that it\u2019s always okay to ask for help, and that the same strategies don\u2019t work for everyone. Ask your child who has more and who has less, or if any of the amounts seem equal. Use words like \u201cquantity,\u201d as in \u201cWhat quantity of grapes do you have?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.49\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geneva304.org\/Downloads\/1st%20Grade%20CCSS%20Math%20Vocabulary%20Word%20List.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find a list of first grade math words here<\/a>, and make an effort to work them in whenever possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group aofl-advice-list4 has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e9f5ff\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explore Real-Life Math<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.49\">The terrific thing about first grade math is that it\u2019s very basic and has lots of real-world applications. Look for opportunities to point out math whenever you\u2019re using it. When you\u2019re out shopping, show them the prices, and ask them which costs more and which costs less. If you need eight paperclips but only have three, let them figure out how many more you need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"aofl-advice-paragraph has-text-color\" style=\"color:#01075f;line-height:1.49\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcmouse.com\/learn\/advice\/how-to-teach-telling-time\/13972\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Telling time<\/a> is one of the most important real-world math skills kids encounter at this age. Give them every opportunity to read analog clocks and tell you the time to the hour or half hour. Make out daily schedules: \u201cBedtime is at 8:00. Lunch is at 12:30.
